From small town, to the “New South” city of Charlotte, “home” is discovered in Savannah! Growing up in the small, historic town of Cheraw, South Carolina, I always looked forward to my family’s shopping trips to Charlotte, N.C. The excitement of a large city fascinated me as a child and later it entertained me as a teenager and college student. It was only natural that upon graduation from Wingate University in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, I moved to Charlotte. In the years which ensued, I held various management and accounting positions, working for high profile doctors, a national truck leasing company, and even a family of entrepreneurs who were early pioneers in network marketing. I always dreamed, however, of working for myself, and in all my jobs and positions, I loved most the day-to-day contact with customers and clients. I met my life partner, Marty, in 1995, and two years later, the two of us opened our own location of his family’s original quick serve restaurant. That one restaurant of ours would later become three restaurants located in two states. And then something unexpected happened in 2003: we discovered Savannah, a city so (!) different from Charlotte in so many ways! My partner had a home on nearby Hilton Head Island, and we started making frequent day trips to Savannah. In every visit, we discovered something unexpected that was truly unique to the city of Savannah. Our discoveries went beyond the historical beauty and architecture that had been discovered long before us by countless numbers of tourists. In the everyday and ordinary places of stores, banks, and fast food restaurants, we found a place where people of different incomes, races, talents, and life experiences not only co-existed, but had a genuine interest in getting to know each other. In 2004, finding ourselves intrigued and fascinated by Savannah and its people, we purchased our home on Wilmington Island. Our purchase was intended to be a second-home … an easy four hour drive from Charlotte. The plans quickly changed. The more time we spent in Savannah, the more time we wanted to be in Savannah! We began to explore its communities, and we began to understand that what Savannah might lack as a large city (and in actuality, that’s not much), it more than makes up for in quality of life. In 2007, it was clear that we ourselves would soon be calling Savannah “home.” Yes, the trees and architecture here are beautiful. But, just wait to you meet the natives! Some cities have slogans about their people and what makes their city special. For myself, I have come to realize that Savannah is really a city all about its people. A little (well, honestly, a lot) like its depiction in “Midnight in the Garden of Good of Evil,” the parties and social gatherings for which Savannah is so well known arise from its long history of diversity and acceptance of everyone. Unlike other historical cities where too often someone’s family history is used to define their acceptance and position, in Savannah, there exists a fascination and interest to anyone who mentions the words “new to town. “ After years of telling people about Savannah, I finally have a job where I can sell the same dream that sold me. In 2009, I pursued a long-time dream of becoming a real estate broker. With 165 hours of accredited real estate education, I am proud to be licensed in Georgia, as well as North Carolina. If you’re a native of Savannah, I hope you’ll give me the opportunity to sell your property, whether it be to “our” neighbors or maybe even someone “new” who may be so lucky (like myself) to just now be discovering what makes Savannah such a very special place to live and call “home.” … And, if do you find yourself “new” to Savannah, or maybe [think!] that you’re here just for a visit, I hope you’ll let me show you around.
