About Michael
After a successful career in the Nashville music business, I left there in 2002 and moved back to my home in northern Michigan where I’d been a building contractor most of my early years. My sister Patty was a real estate broker (still is) and found me a great waterfront “fixer-upper”. In the course of the next year I built a beautiful house and cottage for myself on that lake lot. I built the house entirely by myself and had a lot of pride and a great affinity for the place by the time it was done. It was a great getaway spot for “up north” summers. In 2004 I decided to put the house on the market thinking, like most people do, that I’d make a good profit, re-invest and build again. Since my realtors (Patty and her husband) had recently moved to Naples, I started interviewing real estate agents to list and sell the property. If I was going to pay a serious commission on the sale of my home, I was determined to find a real estate agent that I liked and could trust. Just like everybody else, I’m particular about who gets my money. The first couple of agents I interviewed seemed “overly enthusiastic” about getting me to sign a listing agreement in a hurry. Having been an executive in the entertainment business, I knew what “hype” sounded like when it was coming at me, and that’s what I was hearing from them. They were nice people, but they seemed to have a lot more interest in making a little fast money than they had in getting me a good price for my property. Being both the builder and a business person, I knew the real estate market fairly well by then and what the property was worth, especially to me. That’s why, when I interviewed the “last” agent, I knew right away she was trying to talk my price down so she could get a fast sale. She claimed to have a buyer waiting and ready. Knowing what I know now, I know that if I’d used that realtor I’d have walked away with 30% less than the property was worth. Instead, I decided to get my real estate license and sell it myself… which is exactly what I did.
